Impediments for String Quartet

Duration: a bit over 5'

Performances

  • World Premiere: April 1, 2004, CSULB Composers' Guild, performed by the CSULB University String Quartet

Notes

This piece attempts to convey the frustrations of a college student attempting to take an afternoon nap at home. Numerous distractions keep him from achieving his blissful slumber, including a ticking clock, gardeners, telephone calls, visitors, and MTV. Inspired by a true story.

Composer's Note

I'm not sure how I feel about this piece. There are bits I don't care for. I've considered tossing it, and I've considered hiding it in a box. However, I'm philosophically opposed to significantly revising my own music (except for occasional very small adjustments) for a number of reasons... in essence, even if I would do it differently now, the piece as I wrote it stands as a representation of how I did things at the time. Even if I later obtained massive special effects capabilities, I would not go back and modify my old string quartet so that the violinist shoots first. Wait, what are we talking about?

Anyways, while I'm not decided on my feelings about this piece, it's possible that other people may like to play and/or hear it, so I'm making it available.
