Program Notes
This quirky clarinet piece depicts my grandmother, “Oma,” from my perspective at the age of eight. It begins with Thirty Years, a steady narrative of speech, with outspoken statements and whispers to the side. In the second movement, Old House, I accompany her to work, as a housekeeper, and explore the long corridors and spooky antiques (to an 8-year-old) of a large, pristinely clean house. The finale, Käse und Apfel, takes the listener through a day visiting Oma. I arrive and ring the doorbell, and am warmly greeted to chatter and board and card games. After a quick lunch, we go for a walk (past neighbors, friends, and the Old House). Finally, we return home and watch television, until the doorbell rings and it is time to say goodbye.
